Shadow Boxes and Built-Ins: A Finish Carpentry Facelift in Baldwin, MD
This project brought storage, rhythm, and architectural character into a Maryland home through custom fireplace built-ins, flat stock shadow boxes, and layered trim details that make the living areas feel more complete.
Elevated Trim Details
Flat stock shadow boxes and a craftsman-style band form a subtle frieze below the existing cove crown. The layered detail gives the walls depth and a more intentional rhythm without competing with the rest of the room.
Depth. Shadow boxes give plain walls a stronger architectural presence.
Transition. Banding creates a clean relationship with the existing crown.
Restraint. The wall detail adds character while keeping the room calm.
Custom Built-Ins for Balance
Open shelving flanks the stone fireplace and gives the room useful display space. Closed lower cabinetry adds storage while keeping the fireplace wall anchored and symmetrical.
Storage. Lower cabinets keep everyday items out of sight.
Display. Open shelves add room for books, objects, and layered styling.
Balance. The fireplace wall becomes a stronger focal point.
Sharp Corners and Consistent Lines
Finish carpentry depends on alignment, clean corners, and consistent proportions. The close-up details show the care behind the larger visual effect: panels that sit cleanly on the wall and built-ins that feel tailored to the room.
The Result
The room now has useful storage, a more balanced fireplace wall, and trim work that adds rhythm and character. The finish carpentry feels connected to the home rather than layered on top of it.
