From Bins to Built-In: Basement Storage in Baltimore, MD

When a client in Roland Park reached out about their basement storage struggles, we knew there was an opportunity to transform their space with a smarter, more permanent solution. The family frequently entertained guests but had no dedicated system for storing coats, bins, and household items. Their existing setup relied on stacking plastic totes wherever space allowed, functional but far from ideal.

Turning a Basement Challenge Into an Opportunity

An existing bulkhead in the basement created a natural division between the recreational/leisure side of the room and the laundry area. We used this architectural feature as a backdrop to design a full wall of built-in cabinetry, giving the family both organization and visual separation between zones.

Smart Layout for Everyday Use

While we typically prefer to keep internal cabinet dimensions within 36 inches for practicality and strength, in this case we designed a 48-inch clear opening to accommodate the client’s needs. This larger span allowed for:

  • Hanging Storage: Jackets, coats, and seasonal clothing can be hung neatly on a sturdy rod.

  • Bin Storage: Oversized bins fit comfortably on the lower section, eliminating the clutter of stacks scattered around the basement.

  • Adjustable Shelves: Adjacent compartments provide storage for books, games, and everyday items.

This balance of open hanging space and compartmentalized shelving ensures flexibility for changing family needs.

Hidden Bonus: Slatwall for Tools & Gear

We didn’t stop with standard cabinetry. Behind the fixed shelving section, we installed slatboard wall panels, giving the family a hidden zone for tools, extension cords, and household accessories. This customizable storage system can adapt over time, with hooks, baskets, and hangers easily added or rearranged.

A Clean, Modern Aesthetic

The built-in cabinetry was constructed from light maple plywood, finished to showcase the natural grain for a warm, modern look. Full-height slab doors keep the design streamlined, blending seamlessly into the basement while concealing the busy storage behind them. We added push-to-open hardware for a sleek, handle-free facade, combining style with easy functionality.
